South Africa is mourning the loss of beloved actress Meme Ditshego, who passed away at the age of 60 after a short illness. Known for her memorable comedic talent and decades of dedication to theatre and television, Ditshego’s death has left a void in the entertainment industry.

The actress died on the evening of June 25, 2025, in hospital after her condition worsened over the weekend. While the exact cause of death has not yet been revealed, the news has been confirmed by her agency, Eye Media Artists, who released a heartfelt statement celebrating her life and work.

“It is with deep sorrow and reverence that we announce the passing of Meme Ditshego – a beloved South African actress, legendary comedic talent and a true veteran of our screen and stage,” the agency said. “She was a pioneer of performance – a woman whose vibrant spirit, sharp wit, and undeniable presence brought life to every role she played.”

Ditshego, born in May 1965, began her acting journey in township theatre and became a member of the Sobonile Players. She appeared in classic stage productions such as Antigone, and later worked with the Performing Arts Council of the Transvaal, where she participated in educational theatre outreach programmes from 1989 to 1993.

Her early work also included performances in children’s theatre and the satirical play Don Gzubane Onner die Boere. In the 2000s, she continued to shine on stage in productions like Acropolis Cafe, The Amen Corner, and MacBeki.

Ditshego made her television debut in 1997 on SABC2’s Sterk Skemer, playing the role of Elsie. She went on to appear in a string of popular TV shows, including Soul Buddys, Jozi-H, and Muvhango, where she became a familiar face to South African audiences.

However, it was her comedic brilliance in the M-Net series The Coconuts as Joyce Mlambo that truly made her a household name. Her role in the SABC2 comedy series Ga Re Dumele as Josephine earned her the Best Actress award at the South African Film and Television Awards (Saftas) in 2012, and another nomination in 2014.

Throughout her illustrious career, she appeared in numerous television series and films, including Safe as Hauser’s, Geraamtes in die Kas, Zabalaza, Imposter, Broken Vows, Ak’siSpaza, Erfsondes, The Mating Game, Love, Sex and 30 Candles, Cobrizi, Entangled, and Giyani – Land of Blood.

She also made guest appearances in long-running shows such as Skeem Saam and Onse Kasi, portraying characters that fans remember with warmth and admiration.
